Thursday, July 28, 2005 Republican Senators Move NRA's Gun Bill Ahead The National Rifle Association, who regularly funnels money to the Republican party, has convinced Senators to try to pass a bill that will guard gun makers from lawsuits. The bill would prohibit suits against the firearms industry and protect them from virtually any liability. The bill has now moved ahead of a $491 billion defense bill that is needed to protect the troops. Senate Republicans of course defended this action, since they are afraid to ever disagree with the mighty NRA. The bill is unlikely to be defeated as a test vote showed 66-32 in favor of letting the NRA do whatever it wants. A filibuster would likely not work. Tuesday, July 26, 2005 AFL-CIO Fractures. Democrats Fear Weaker Political Base SEIU (Service Employees International Union) and the Teamsters Union left the AFL-CIO today in a move to stop the decline of union workers and to rebuild. Since unions represent a strategic base to the Democratic party, they became very worried that a split would weaken their base. However, the AFL-CIO has been slow to change and has not been successful in the past two decades in restoring membership or worker rights. All they have been doing is throwing money at politicians. The rights of workers, especially those of larger firms, have deteriorated markedly in the past 20 years. Monday, July 25, 2005 White House Refuses to Release Documents on Roberts The Bush Administration will not release all of the memos and documents they have that relate to their choice for the Supreme Court. Claiming privacy concerns, the administration has decided not to let Congress have a full set of information when the vote to nominate Roberts to the Supreme Court. Roberts worked for two Republican presidents in the past and his opinions on important legislation may be contained in those documents. Roberts worked in the White House counsel's office from 1982-86 and worked in the first Bush administration as the principal deputy solicitor general. U.K. Police State They May Kill More Innocent People The British police mistakenly killed an innocent man on Friday. 27 year old Jean Charles de Menezes was an electrician and had lived in London for the past three years. Senior level police officials defended the shoot to kill philosophy, despite the fact that they put eight bullets into an innocent man. For British police to kill anyone is a rarity, as most of the police do not even carry firearms. The fear and panic that the terrorists are attempting to create in the public is also seeping into law enforcement. A new poll in Great Britain found that a majority of citizens believe that Britain's' involvement in the war in Iraq was the primary cause of the subway attacks. Tuesday, July 19, 2005 Bush Nominates John G. Roberts to Supreme Court After weeks of speculation, George Bush has nominated 50 year old Judge John G. Roberts to be Associate Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court. Roberts is clearly a staunch conservative and is opposed to Roe v. Wade. If he passes the nomination process, there will be dozens of laws that will be changed in this country. Since he would be replacing Justice O'Conner, who is a swing vote on many key issues, including abortion and affirmative action, many laws will be revisited and could possibly be overturned. He is also a pro-life man and it remains to be seen whether this will hurt him in the nomination process as Roe v. Wade may hang in the balance. Pro-choice groups are already calling for a filibuster. Monday, July 18, 2005 Dick Cheney's Chief of Staff Also Involved in Leak In what appears to be an ever growing collection of corrupt White House officials, it was discovered today that Lewis Libby, the vice president's chief of staff, was also a source of the leak that revealed the identity of Valerie Plame, a CIA officer. The White House had also insisted over the last two years that Libby had nothing to do with the leak. Now, they are making no such statements. The only response of the White House is to attack, attack, attack. This time their target is Joseph Wilson, Valerie Plame's husband. In the past, they have attacked Paul O'Neil, Richard Clarke, and virtually every other person who has criticized them. British Sunnis Condemn London Bombing Britain's largest Sunni Muslim group has come out and condemned the terrorist attacks in London. Although it took them 10 days to come out and condemn the attacks, the wording of their statement was quite harsh. Egyptian police are now interrogating a fifth man, who is said to be an Egyptian biochemist. Investigators found traces of explosives in his bathtub. He was arrested in Cairo. Egyptian police are not yet ready to hand him over to the British authorities. Sunday, July 17, 2005 Suicide Bomber Kills 98 in Iraq; Saddam Charged In what is one of the worst attacks thus far in Iraq, a suicide bomber exploded a fuel truck, killing at least 98 people. Three more suicide bombers attacked Baghdad. In what is considered a lawless area in Iraq, the fuel truck was blown up near a crowded vegetable market in Musayyib. The lack of U.S. or Iraqi troops in certain areas of the country has created a sort of anarchy in the streets. U.S. troops call the area "the triangle of death". There is no question that we need more troops in Iraq, not only to protect the borders, but to keep order and peace in the regions where there is no presence. Monday, July 11, 2005 White House Won't Comment on Karl Rove's Leak For two years, the White House said that senior advisor Karl Rove had nothing to do with revealing the identity of a CIA agent and that when they found out who did make the leak, that person would be fired. Now the White House refuses to comment. Democrats are only asking that Rove resign or have his security clearance revoked. If he knew she was covert, he clearly committed a federal crime and needs to be prosecuted for it. George Bush, is quickly losing credibility, as he has yet to fire the people responsible for the leaks. The White House has gone on the attack and is parsing their words, much like the Clinton Administration did during their scandals.
