Thursday, September 14, 2006 - 12:00am Ann Richards, Former Texas Governor, Dies at 73 Dorothy Ann Richards died tonight at the age of 73 after a long battle with cancer. She was most known for being the Democratic Governor of Texas from 1991-1995. She lost her bid for re-election to George W. Bush in 1994.
Ann Richards spent her life fighting for the rights of women, the rights of gays, minorities, and equality for everyone. Before her time as Governor of Texas, Ann Richards was the State Treasurer from 1982-1990. Prior to that, she helped push Texas to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment in the Constitution.
She also delivered the keynote speech at the 1988 Democratic National Convention, which increased her public profile. Richards ripped into then Vice President H.W. Bush with some great one-liners.
After serving as governor, Ann Richards stumped for other Democratic candidates and also wrote a book in 2004 about her struggle with osteoporosis. She was diagnosed with esophagel cancer earlier this year, which is a malignancy of the esophagus.
