Monday, June 12, 2006 - 4:30pm Ben Roethlisberger Seriously Injured in Motorcycle Accident The Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident late this morning in downtown Pittsburgh. He was not wearing a helmet and crashed into a car at an intersection. He flew over the handlebars of his bike and hit his head on the windshield of the car. Current reports are that Ben Roethlisberger is in serious, but stable condition and that he is undergoing surgery. He is said to have damaged both knees, broke his jaw, fractured his left sinus cavity bone, and lost some teeth. Roethlisberger also has a very large gash in his head. A plastic surgeon has already been brought in to assist. From a political perspective, this brings to light the 2003 repeal of the motorcycle helmet law in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. At the time, lawmakers had decided that they would let bikers have more freedom. Personally, I don't know what they were thinking. I'm all for personal freedom, but repealing that law does not make much sense. Now one of the most well known people in all of Pennsylvania is severely injured as a result of not wearing a helmet. Ben Roethlisberger is already a legend in western Pennsylvania for helping to bring a Super Bowl to Pittsburgh in just his second professional season. This is Ben's fault, of course, but I wonder if this law will be re-examined now that their golden child has suffered these extensive injuries. Hopefully, the government in Pennsylvania and in other states that do not have helmet laws will take another look at this issue. It can only help and protect their citizens.
