Below are two
Popeye the Sailor t-shirts from the comic strip character of the
early twentieth century. Popeye, Olive Oyl, and Bluto were the
main cartoon characters. Popeye gets his strength from
spinach, as seen in one t-shirt. The other shows Bluto. |

You
have to go as far back as 1929 to discover the beginnings of
Popeye the Sailor. The animated comic strip featured
the spinach-eating tough guy, Olive Oil as the girlfriend,
and Bluto as the thug-like nemesis who is always trying to
kidnap Olive Oil. One Popeye t-shirts focuses on the
green spinach, while the rest of the shirt is in black and
white. A television series was created off the comic
strip and so was a movie in 1980. The character Bluto
is seen in the other t-shirt as a Bad to the Bone!
Video games and pinball games were also spun off the
original Popeye comic strip. Nearly eighty years after
its creation, the merchandise still sells. |
